Corn
oil is extracted from the germ of corn. Its main use in cooking, where its high
smoke point makes refined corn oil a valuable frying oil.
The germ, which constitutes 8-14% of the total weight of
the corn grain, includes 84-86% of the total oil content of the corn. The germ
is the primary product for making corn oil and one of the important ingredients
of animal fodder.
The germ oil contains unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic 56%,
oleic 30%, linolenic 0.7%) and 14% of saturated fatty acids. Its protein part
includes about 37% globulins, 51% glutelin, 5% zein, and 7% of non-soluble
oils. Maize germ also carries a wide range of amino acids and is rich in
vitamin Е (tocopherol), beta-sitostiron and phytin.
Cornoil refining process contains corn crude oil, degumming, alkali refining,
washing, drying, alkali refining oil, declorizing, filter, decolorizing oil,
crystallization, maturing, dewaxing oil, deodor, cooling.
The
main equipment are disc oil separator, decolorizing tower, filter,
crystallization tank, maturing tank, deodor tower. In the deodor section, the
temperature in the tower is need to controlled about 230 centigrade. The
finished oil after deodor section must be cooled, avoid corn oil color
reversion. In order to improve corn oil yield, low product cost, the alkali oil
acid value must be control a certain range. The filter aid adopt diatomite can
improve dewax effect.
