The
process from picking the oil palm to how it gets into stores is quite
fascinating for a palm oil enthusiast, the palm oil has to be extracted and
this requires the use of a system that is familiar to process plant engineers. It
firstly involves separating a grading process where the good fruits are
separated from the bad since they are lower quality. The good fruits are then
placed in a large conveyor system which leads to a splitter which is true to
its name because it literally splits the palm fruits into smaller pieces.
Palm oil is an
edible oil, high in saturated fats, derived from the fruit of the oil palm
tree. It is grown commercially in several tropical countries but mainly in
Indonesia and Malaysia, which account for 85% of global palm oil production.
The palm fruit
yields two distinct oils – palm oil and palm kernel oil. Palm oil is extracted from the pulp of the fruit, is edible and used
primarily in food products. Palm kernel oil is extracted from the seed of the
fruit and is used mainly in the manufacture of soaps and cosmetics, while palm
kernel is used as a feed for livestock and biofuel for generating electricity.
Palm oil process
mainly includes weighing, unloading fruit, sterilization, threshing, empty
fruit bunches, digesting, pressing, fiber separation, kernel separation,
clarification, oil transfer, water treatment, power house.
