Palm kernel oil is obtained from the kernel of the oil palm fruit, its composition and properties differ significantly from palm oil. Palm kernel oil is similar to coconut oil in terms of composition, and is produced by mechanical extraction of the kernels which are pre-dried in palm oil mills through a partial vacuum process, the quality of the oil is excellent, with free fatty acids of the crude oil generally below2%. It is light yellow in color and is refined physically to produce a light colored oil used for both edible and other purposes, the oil is also semi solid at ambient temperatures, it can be further fractionated to yield a high value fraction such as palm kernel stearin with good melting properties, the sharp melting profile also indicates that the oil is highly suitable for confectionery applications. Due to its rapid crystallization behavior, it is often used in enrobing or dipping products.

Palm kernels must undergo seeds preparation steps of size reduction, flaking and steam conditioning prior to mechanical extraction, mechanical wear and tear, maintenance expenses and electricity are the major costs.

The direct solvent extraction process is used in larger plants. Production cost depends mainly on solvent loss and energy used in solvent recovery and pelletizing. However, oil recovery is more complete than in screw pressing.

A third processing method uses pre-pressing followed by solvent extraction.

The choice of process or machinery depends on capital investment, production cost, oil recovery and its value. Whether the higher investment and production cost incurred in solvent extraction is offset by the higher oil extraction rate needs to determined.

Strict quality control right from fruit processing to kernel extraction is necessary to ensure production of good quality oil and by-products. Malaysia palm kernel oil has proven to be of consistent quality, with narrow ranges in chemical characteristics. The palm kernel cake and pellets are important ingredients for animal feed.

Protein isolate,

Protein isolate is obtained by alkaline extraction and acid precipitation. The procedure is as follows: extraction of defatted meal with alkali liquor, centrifugal separation of indissoluble material in the meal (mainly polysaccharides), adjusting of leach liquor PH to the isoelectric point of protein with acid. When the protein achieves the isoelectric point, the protein coagulates and settles down. Finally, the protein precipitate after separation needs washing, neutralizing and drying.

sunflower seeds oil, Sunflower seeds come in 2 types: the non-oil seed that are eaten as confectionery products after roasted with the shell or without the shell as kernels, and the oil seed that are processed into oil and meal which is a by-product of sunflower seed oil extraction primarily used as an ingredient in livestock feed rations.

Refining the sunflower seeds oil is to remove color, odor and bitterness. Refining involves heating the oil to 40°C -85°C (107-188 degree Fahrenheit) and mixing an alkaline substance such as sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate with the oil. Then soap forms form the undesired fatty acids and the alkaline additive, and usually it is removed by centrifugal process. The oil will be further cleaned to remove soap traces and then dried.

The oil is also de-gummed at this time by treating it with water-heated steam of 85°C -95°C (188-206 degree Fahrenheit), or water with acid. Most of the gum is the phosphatides to be precipitated out, and the dregs are removed by centrifugal process.
